Tips for a Rewarding
Retirement
Eventually we all reach a
new place in life unlike any
we’ve known before. If your
children have left to start
their own families and your
once demanding career has
faded into the background,
then you are likely entering
your retirement years. This
new era is one with few
pressing daily demands.
You’ll have the opportunity
to finally do all those
things you would have done
if only you had had the
time. Some people don’t know
how to deal with the
newfound freedom and time.
They may even feel bored and
listless. This is a mistake!
Retirement is your chance to
take life’s reins and ride
where you choose. Here are
pointers to help you get the
most from your retirement.
Meet People- Whether old
friends you haven’t seen in
ages or new friends you’ve
yet to meet, now is the
perfect time to make
connections with people.
Grab your rolodex and make
some calls. Go out and join
a local club to meet people
with similar interests as
you. Visit the library and
find out what clubs are
active in your area, or surf
the net to find out about
local groups. Meeting new
people is a great way to
pass the time, and you never
know what you might learn.
Don’t Stop Learning- Now
is your chance to learn
things you’ve always wanted
to learn. You can finally
take creative writing
lessons or learn your
favorite language, or you
can take a course on
cooking. Why not take up a
new hobby? Perhaps you
should finally learn what it
takes to get your favorite
dutailier sleigh glider,
and do it yourself. Local
colleges offer many
affordable courses on
virtually every topic out
there.
Enjoy Movement- Whether
you like to cycle, hike,
walk, or swim, make sure you
keep moving. Exercise and
physical activities have a
tremendous effect on our
physical and mental
well-being. Joints loosen
and stiffness fades. Our
body releases endorphins
that make us feel better.
Our circulation increases
and our bodies get stronger.
You’re never too old to
exercise. But if you aren’t
sure whether you should be
starting a new routine, talk
to your doctor first.
Be a Role Model-
Mentoring is a great way to
make a difference in
someone’s life. Having a
positive role model to look
up to can make all the
difference in a child’s
life. Whether to your own
grandchildren or to
neighborhood youths, take
the time to lend advice and
support. You might want to
join a mentoring group or
perhaps get involved
coaching a local sports
team. There are many ways to
get involved with young
people.
Consider a Pet- Making
friends with a new animal is
often a rewarding
experience. Maybe you’ve
always wanted a bird but
never had the time. Here’s
your chance. Spending time
with an animal is very
soothing. Visit a local
animal shelter to find out
what animals need homes. You
might just fall in love with
a new furry friend. Aren’t
sure if you want a new pet?
Consider pet sitting for a
relative or friend. This way
you’ll be able to experience
spending time with an animal
without making such a big
commitment.
Expand Your Horizons-
Don’t limit yourself to the
same old places. Get out
there and explore a little.
Consider traveling to exotic
countries. Have you ever
been to Europe? Or Asia? If
you’re not sure you want to
travel alone, look into
local travel groups.
Traveling with a group of
like-minded individuals can
be a great way to see the
world. Even if you don’t
travel far, seeing new
things is stimulating and
exciting. Visit parts of
your own country that you
haven’t seen, or visit other
parts of town. There is so
much to see out there!
Make a Difference-
Joining a worthwhile cause
can be a satisfying and
worthwhile endeavor. Perhaps
you’d like to get involved
in a grassroots effort?
Whether it’s human rights,
animal rights, or the
environment, standing up for
something you’re passionate
about will give your life
meaning and purpose.
Sometimes focusing on
something other than
yourself will bring you more
happiness and fulfillment.
Plus you’ll know you are
helping to make a positive
difference in the world.
Retirement is the beginning
of your new life. Don’t let
the many opportunities you
have slip away. Be active,
keep on learning, and make a
difference in the world. Do
all those things you always
wanted to do. Now is the
best time of your life, so
get out there an enjoy it.
